Discharge and eligibility

The rulesBenefits with an other than honorable discharge (character of discharge review)If your discharge is other than honorable or bad conduct (from a special court-martial), VA decides for itself whether your service counts for VA benefits. A 2024 rule made it easier to qualify.
Who qualifies

What it costs
Free.
How to get it
Just apply for the benefit you want. VA will do the character of discharge review. Those denied before may reapply.
Limits
Bars that still apply: general court-martial sentence, desertion, conscientious objector refusing duty, officer resignation for good of the service, AWOL 180+ days (unless compelling circumstances), discharge in lieu of general court-martial, mutiny or spying. Insanity at the time can lift a bar. VA's decision does not change your military discharge.
